Perhaps these incidents were isolated, but this slowdown could really hurt the local multiplayer experience. Our major concern with the split-screen option was the framerate, which suffered considerably during our play sessions. While Pillage Mode has you scouring the land looking for gold while your friend does the same, Survival Mode gives you the chance to work together and fight against waves of enemies. You and a friend can hop into a number of different arenas and fight either against each other or alongside one another and you both get a handful of minions to command. The last new element of Overlord we spent some time with was the split-screen multiplayer. We imagine this map will prove more valuable as your progress through the main campaign. Although you can eventually find your way after a look around, being able to trace your progress and always locate a spawn point for your creatures is extremely helpful. This feature definitely helps keep you oriented in some of the more intricate environments, especially towards the beginning of the game when you enter the Halfling Homes. 'But Master, I'm legally obligated to take two fifteen-minute breaks!' What Overlord fans might not recognize is the mini-map now located on the lower-left corner of the screen. Just like the 360 version, this is satisfying and made even more palatable because you continuously add to your tower by gathering more items to "pimp out" your personal space. The majority of the gameplay in Overlord revolves around running through mostly linear environments and solving creature-based puzzles, all while trouncing any living thing that stands in your way.

Those snickering creatures are your only hope for besting certain monsters in battle and you'll need to learn how to strategically maneuver them and play to their strengths. As for your personal character, you can swing your mighty axe and cast a few spells, but the real power of your dark legacy comes from your minions. These little demons toss fireballs at your enemies and can walk right through fire - something that will claim the lives of the brown ones. After a few hours of play time, you'll release a group of red minions from captivity and can use them in battle.
Brown minions are basic fighters, resilient to damage and good with straight-forward attacks. Although we didn't get to see all the minions you'll have at your disposal, you'll eventually have four different types of creatures to summon, each with what is basically an elemental alignment. You can also send them onward with a push of R2 and recall them with the circle button. You can move around freely with the left stick and manually control the direction of your current minions with the right one. Although controlling Overlord takes a few minutes to click, the setup works quite nicely. You're guided through the basic controls by your head servant and you soon find yourself walking the dilapidated halls of your once great tower. At the beginning of Overlord, your character rises from a deep slumber and is greeted by the demonic yet smiling faces of his minions. Although we're not usually the ones jumping onto the sinister bandwagon, let's take a look at what being evil is all about. We had the chance to take Overlord: Raising Hell out for a spin.
